Uptown International School

Middle Years Programme

The MYP is a 5-year programme for students from Grades 6 to 10, providing a framework that is flexible and compatible with national and international systems and standards of education. “Uptown International School (UIS) is a Candidate School* for the Middle Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Uptown International School believes is important for our students.”

UIS integrates the American Common Core Standards within the MYP framework, allowing for graduation with both IB and American diploma certificates.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org

Inquiry-based, concept-driven curriculum

Across all the IB programmes, the learner profile attributes are constantly at the core. These are 10 attributes the world needs in its young generations to help make it a better place. Thus, from early childhood until graduation, students learn to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. Focus in the MYP is on conceptual understanding and the development of skills which enables students to become independent, capable, life-long learners.

MYP students study big ideas through concepts and relevant global contexts at a breadth and depth that allows them to make connections between the eight subject groups. The eight subject groups in MYP are: language acquisition, language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design.

Multilingualism is a hallmark of international mindedness and intercultural understanding. At UIS, English is the language of instruction across all subjects except in subjects teaching another language. English and Arabic are both taught as Language and Literature subjects. Students may choose French or German as Language Acquisition. The arts are offered at UIS as visual arts and performing arts. UIS also offers Arabic Language, Arabic Social Studies, and Religion as subjects required by the Egyptian Ministry of Education.

IB-trained teachers in the MYP use a range of assessments and constructive feedback to support and measure student learning.
Each subject is assessed using four criteria which go beyond exams that focus on students’ ability to memorize and recall facts.
As students approach the end of MYP 4 (Grade 9), they begin working on their Personal Projects until the end of MYP 5 (Grade 10). The Personal Project is a culmination of student learning throughout their MYP journey, making use of their developed skills, knowledge, and personal passions and interests.

MYP students have consistently higher pass rates in the Diploma Programme (DP) than any other candidates.
